I started using a robot vacuum cleaner to clean my house several years back and have never regretted it. Over the years, I have used plenty of robot cleaners, ranging from an expensive Neato bot to a cheap unbranded one. I had this chance to try out the Yeedi K650 robot vacuum and found it pretty capable. Let’s see how it performs.

Setting Up

When first taken out of the box, you need to attach the side brushes to the robot before you can use it. Luckily, the assembly is easy. The brushes are color-coded, so you just need to attach them to the respective slots beneath the vacuum.

Next, place the charging dock on the floor and connect it to the power socket. Power on the robot (the power switch is at the side of the robot) and place it on the charging dock to charge.

One thing that is missing from the box is a remote control, and this is intentional. This is my first and only robot vacuum cleaner that didn’t come with a remote control, and I was not used to it initially. There is only one button on the cleaner itself. Press once for it to start cleaning or to stop it when it is cleaning. Long press on the button to get it return to the base. That’s it.

While edge and spot cleaning mode is available, it can only be activated via the mobile app. I do find this quite inconvenient.

Installing the app (Android, iOS) is almost a must since it doesn’t come with a remote control. If you are looking to control and program the robot cleaner, you will have to use the app.

Setting up the Yeedi app

After the installation, launch the app. Click “add a robot.” To pair with the robot cleaner, the easiest way is to scan the QR code on the robot cleaner.

Once connected, it will prompt you to enter your Wi-Fi username and password so it can connect the device to your network.

Lastly, you can scroll left or right to change the cleaning mode to Edge or spot cleaning. The default is Auto.

In the app, you can set the suction power of the robot. The default is Standard (600Pa), but you can increase it to Max (1200Pa) or Max+ (2000Pa). In my case, I am using Standard, and it has no problem cleaning up the place well. I don’t have carpet in my place, nor do I have dogs or cats, so the basic mode is good enough for me.

There is also a Cleaning Log page where you can view the floor area it cleaned every day. This is useful to check if the robot is working when you are not at home.

Performance

Due to its large dustbin, this Yeedi K650 cleaner is also slightly bigger than other robot cleaners. During cleaning, it is very quiet (about 56dB) and won’t distract much from your work. However, if you switch the suction power to either Max or Max+, the noise gets significantly louder.

The Yeedi K650 doesn’t come with a mapping function, so it just moves around randomly cleaning the whole house. It just keep going on and on for two hours until the battery is flat and it calls it a day and returns to the base for charging. The suction power is pretty good and is able to clean almost any small dirt and debris along its way.

There are a few times where it got stuck under the table, and every time it managed to get itself out. I am quite impressed with that. It has an obstacle detection sensor at its front and will slow down when it detects an obstacle from afar. The only exception is when there isn’t enough lighting for it to detect the obstacle. My kitchen is quite dimly lit, and it keeps on bumping into every cabinet along its way.

The big dustbin (800ml) is probably the biggest I have ever encountered. The good thing is that it takes a long time to fill up, and I only need to clear it once per month.

For those of you who are worried that the main brush will get tangled up with hair, Yeedi provides a separate silicon tangle-free brush that you can use. True enough, once I switched to it, I haven’t seen any hair or dust tangled in it.

The robot vacuum supports magnetic border detection so you can place the magnetic strip at places where you don’t want it to venture to. While this is great, you have to provide your own magnetic strip, as it is not included in the box. I had one from my previous robot cleaner, so I don’t have the need to get one. But be warned that if you have a need for this function, you have to get your own magnetic strips.

Conclusion

Most robot vacuum cleaners are able to clean well. What separates one from another are the minor details. In this case, the big suction power and a big dustbin make this a robot vacuum you can consider. On the other hand, the lack of a remote controll can hinder that.

The Yeedi K650 is selling at $199.99, and you can get it here.
