Our Rating

8 / 10

I’ve been saying that if I didn’t have AirPods, EarFun would be my earbuds of choice. I really enjoyed them when I reviewed them previously. This led to me being super-excited to try the new EarFun Free 2 Earbuds. Find out in this review how they fared.

Setting Up the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds

Earfun Free 2 Unboxing

The EarFun Free 2 Earbuds ship with everything you’d expect them to:

  • Earbuds
  • Charging case
  • USB-C to USB-A charging cord
  • 2 other sizes of ear tips
  • User Manual

Fit of the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds

Unlike many popular earbuds, the EarFun Free 2 do not have a stem that hangs down. The whole earbud fits in your ear. The one in my right ear was fine – it was the one in my left ear that gave me trouble. After about an hour of wear, it was hurting my ear, yet when I bent down, it fell out.

I tried a larger ear tip, but that didn’t seem too secure, yet it did stop hurting. It seems these earbuds are just too large for my ears.

Pairing the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds

I had a little trouble pairing my last EarFuns – but not the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds. These paired very easily, the usual way you’d pair any Bluetooth device.

While the earbuds will pair with multiple devices, you have to re-pair them every time you switch devices. That’s not unusual for earbuds; however, it is a pain.

Using the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds

Many earbuds have the same type of touch controls, where controlling them is all done through multiple taps and long-taps on the right or left earbud. Since I have longer hair, it’s not the best for me, as my hair gets in the way.

Nevertheless, the EarFun Free 2 touch controls work as well as any others. Whether initiating play, stop, next track, answering a call, etc., the tapping works as well as any others.

Sound of the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds

I will say the most impressive feature of the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds is the sound quality. It’s quite fantastic. They are the first earbuds I’ve tried that measure up to the AirPods in terms of quality, and these are a fraction of the price. When they aren’t fitting square in my ears, however, the sound can suffer.

I put the earbuds through a sound evaluation test for headphones, and I have to say, they passed with flying colors. The high frequency range didn’t perform well, but it also said our abilities to hear this range can decrease as we age, and I’m 57, so that could very well account for that. With the binaural test, I was looking over my shoulder, looking to see who was knocking around me – and this was despite knowing I was putting the earbuds through this test.

The earbuds also feature noise cancellation and low latency. I did not try out the latter, as it wasn’t suitable for the situations where I was using the earbuds. But when I was able to achieve a good fit, I found the noise cancellation worked well.

I wear earbuds when walking, so I don’t want to block out ALL noise, but it’s nice if the heavy traffic noise can be muted so that I don’t miss anything when listening to an audiobook.

One thing I missed with the EarFun earbuds is in-ear detection. Some earbuds will pause once you take one or both earbuds out of your ears. The EearFuns did not. I stopped to talk to neighbors and pulled the earbuds out. When I resumed my walk, I found out the audiobook had continued on without me.

Charging the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds

A great feature of the EarFun Free 2 Earbuds is that they can be charged two ways. While the earbuds charge in the case, as most do these days, I’m not counting that – I mean there are two ways to charge the case. It charges through a USB-C cord. Additionally, it can be charged on a wireless charging pad.

Earfun Free 2 Charging

The user manual says between the case and earbuds, you’ll get 30 hours of playtime. I charged them to full when I first got them, used them all night, recharged them in the morning, and have used them for 45 minutes to an hour every day since. I haven’t had to recharge again, and that was nearly two weeks ago.

Final Thoughts

The EarFun Free 2 Earbuds are available for just $44.99 after clipping the Amazon coupon for 10% off.

I believe that’s a steal based on sound quality alone. The only negatives are the bulkiness and lack of in-ear detection. If you can live without those, you may have found yourself new earbuds.
